The MenaIi Suspension Bridge joined two sections of the A5 on its epic journey from London to Holyhead, built by Thomas Tellford and opened in 1826 to carry Anglesey's only road to the mainland. It was the world's longest bridge at that time, with a main span of 579 ft. Telford's wrought iron chains were replaced with steel as late as 1938-40.
24 years after Thomas Telford built this bridge Robert Stephenson opened his monumental Britannia Bridge, hammering home the last of its three million rivets himself. The bridges are just a mile apart. Initially the Britannia Bridge was a railway bridge but is now a road bridge also.

You cannot see the proud lion now unless you venture up the bank near the railway line (which is screened off) underneath the road bridge |
The lions stand either side the railway line.
