HERB GARDEN

These pictures were taken going down the garden path to my herb garden. The garden at the back is on three levels. The herb garden is the second terrace. I enjoy growing scented plants and in the pictures below you can see the blue heliotrope. Heliotropes were grown in Victorian times and were commonly called Cherry Pie because it is believed they smell of cherry pie.

The first scented plant I was given was Southernwood (Artemesia Abrotonum) also known as Lads Love or Old Man. These country names were given to the plant because young men used to wear a sprig of Artemesia in their buttonhole and they would often give it to their sweetheart, hence the name Lads Love. It is also believed a paste could be made from the seed of the plant which could be rubbed on to a youth's chin to help a beard grow, hence Old Man! Culpepper recommended the ashes of the plant be mingled with salad oil as a remedy for baldness..

My favourite scented herb has to be Lemon Verbena
I grow a lot of different scented mints ranging from banana mint, peppermint, pineapple mint, eau de cologne mint - which is really beautiful, orange mint, ginger mint, garden mint, etc. Sages also have pleasant smells, I have a lovely one smelling of pineapple.
