I am taking three books back to the library today. I finished Farm on the Hill last night. The other two are Country World and Old Farmhouse Recipes, all written by Alison Uttley. The last chapter in the Farm on the Hill covered the death of Queen Victoria news of which was delivered by the Postman, it made me think of what the country was like before telephones, twitter and instant news. All the essays in the book were very descriptive and covered life in a remote country farm in the 1800's and early 1900's before most people owned a motor car or had running water and electricity, things we take so much for granted today.
I added to my own book collection on Saturday, another Alison Uttley book called 'Ambush of Young Days', bought in a second hand book shop in Colwyn Bay. I am now looking for 'Carts & Candlesticks'.
There is a wonderful bookshop in Cromford, Derbyshire, Alison Uttley's village. There are three floors and a small coffee shop. There is also a lovely hotel in Cromford called the Greyhound, worth a visit.
I made some Chaddesden Barley Water and Dr Broster's Lemon Water, recipes from the Old Farmhouse Recipe Book, still haven't made my ginger beer, must do so as I got some fresh yeast from Asda the other day.
