OFF TO DUMFRIES
WALK TO TOP OF RIVINGTON PIKE
I understand I am about to go on a long walk, I am not sure about this |
I'd better try to eat something first |
That's better, ready for what lies ahead |
Oh I do wish I could read |
Ready, off we go, follow me |
Can you tell me about this little grey rabbit? |
The path is quite steep |
That must be a folly |
Whatever is this, I think it is the Pigeon Tower |
Lady Leverhulme had a sewing room in this building, I am told |
Peepo, this is fun |
Down this old lane, I wonder who was the first to go down it? |
Phew, now have I got to climb up to the top of that hill? I'm the King of the Castle' - I can see for miles - I can even see Blackpool Tower |
What a nice bridge |
Look at that heather |
Here we are back at the big barn |
Now we have arrived back at The Hall What a big bike, he said it took three days to build |
Bye for now.
POEM - DARK LANE, KINGSLEY
Mr & Mrs Main were well known people in Kingsley Village. For many years they served the community and started the Evergreen Club for the over 60's.They lived in Dark Lane and Mrs Main wrote the following poem which I am sure she would be pleased to know I had been able to remember her and include her poem on my blog. They are both sadly missed but remembered.
Dark Lane Delight
Not very far from the city scene.
Lies Kingsley lovely and serene.
With attractive old buildings
Like the Church on the hill,
And homely old cottages,
A stream and a mill.
A stream that babbles its way along.
Mingling with the birds' sweet song.
Down from the Nab, along the lane,
Across the road and back again,
Through dear Brookside, a pretty sight,
Seen either by day or yet by night.
Never a village has seemed so fair,
As when the orchards blossomed there.
The laburnums too in their splendid array.
Have thrilled me now for many a day
and now we have our summer show,
of roses in abundant glow.
A cockerel crows to greet the day,
and ponies clip clop along their way.
One can see them grazing and tossing mane,
as one goes for a walk along Dark Lane.
In a field by the road where they can go free,
a more picturesque sight one never did see
but apart from its beauty its a cheery place
when you never are far from a friendly face
and most of the natives will say "How do"
and really seem to welcome you.
I'm very proud of my adopted home
and know I will never want to roam.
(Mrs Eileen Main).

'IN SEARCH OF WALES'
I bought two old books yesterday both by H V Morton. Their titles are 'In Search of Wales' and 'In Scotland Again'.
Here is a quote from the book about Wales regarding Conway castle:
'So the old castle at Conway stands with its grey feet in the ruthless story of ambition which is history.....
I went out into the lovely little town. In the church I found a remarkable gravestone, that of a man called 'Hookes of Conway. Gent'. He died in 1639. This stated that Hookes was the forty-first child of William Hookes, and that he himself had been the father of twenty-seven children!
This is surely one of the most remarkable boasts in the country.'
Next time I visit Conway I will go in search of this gravestone, I wonder if it is still there.
(My brother told me that H V Morton had mentioned the little church in Cornwall, mentioned in an earlier blog, in his book In Search of England. Unfortunatley, this book was not on offer at the bookshop yesterday).

THE LONELY NIGHT - MEDITATION
'It is I - be not afraid'
Lonely is the night
When those we love are far away
For it is dark at eventide
'Lord Jesus light the way'.
Touch my life with sympathy
That all men's ways are known
That I may notice other troubles
And forget mine own.
(From my book Light at Eventide by Kathleen Partridge)
END OF WALK & LWR's BATH TIME
MORNING MEDITATION - BEHOLD
Behold
Above, above all birds in air
Below, below all earth's flowers
Inland, inland all forest trees
Seaward, seaward all ocean fish
Sing out and say
again the refrain:
Behold this lovely world.
