Last night was Halloween or All Hallow's Eve the night before All Saints' Day. As a child I knew this night as Soul Caking Night and would go out with a friend singing:
"This night we come a souling, good nature to find,
Step down in your cellar and see what you find,
You will find some Roman brandy and the best of all good wine.
Christmas is coming and the geese are getting fat,
will you please put a penny in the old man's hat,
If you haven't got a penny, a halfpenny will do,
if you haven't got a halfpenny God bless you".
I remember going to a large house in the village where we were invited into the kitchen and the old lady had a cauldron on a smoky fire bubbling away, she was very witch like but she gave us quite a lot of money. She used to ride around the village on a large horse.
Some of little white rabbit's friend came round last night and listened to ghost stories:
All the rabbits listen to the ghost story |
Do you like the turnip lantern? |
Now it is time for Blue Ted to read |
Little white rabbit pretends to be a ghost |
